The helicopter, which was contracted to San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) was worked on by Erickson technicians throughout Wednesday and Thursday, they then approved the Sun Bird to resume lifting on Thursday. ![]() The helicopter was grounded while an investigation ensued, it turned out that a short circuit in the remote controlled hooks caused them to release the load. We understand that the highway was closed for the lift and no one was injured. Early on Tuesday morning the Sun Bird Erickson air crane helicopter placing a tower close to a highway near San Diego in California, dropped a the load from a height of more than 70 metres. This week one machine has dropped two seven tonne transmission towers alone. ![]() ![]() We normally don’t cover big helicopters that are used to lift loads in difficult to reach locations, but if the past week is anything to go by they seem to be more prone to accidents than land based cranes.
